Regardless of age or style, there is a print for every person—and behind each original antique print is a story. In years past, prints served as a way for scholars to transcribe anything from maps to architectural sketches to botanical diagrams. Every print is a time capsule of history. “Prints were done primarily to document and disseminate information,” says Helen Stewart, print collector and director of Rare Prints Gallery in Franklin, Tennessee. “There was a purpose behind creating these pieces.” That purpose didn’t die with the original owners. Despite originally being considered an afterthought by its owners, the carriage house-style apartment above Charmion Hain and her husband’s two-car garage has served many needs. In its first year, the space was a full-time abode for their family members. Award-winning pencil artist Karmel Timmons came by her talent naturally. Her mother was an artist at heart but a full-time mom by day who would leave art supplies around the house in hopes that her children would take an interest in drawing. “I think she wanted me to become an artist,” says Karmel, who pursued art throughout school. The belief that it would be impossible to make a living as an artist, though, drove her to a job far from the art world. It’s really no mystery why the American Dream conjures up images of a cozy cottage with a shady front porch, all surrounded by a white picket fence. Such sentimental visions represent cherished ideas—like home, family, security, and the ability to claim a plot of land—that are near and dear to our hearts. With this said, modesty and quaintness have always been hallmarks of the cottage style. Historically, these meager homes contained few, if any, frills. Instead, they provided the basic essentials of shelter for European peasant farmers known as cottars (hence the origin of “cottage”). As an architectural designer, Tim Sandberg was no stranger to living on the road, moving from jobsite to jobsite, and staying at hotels with his wife, Janelle, at his side. In seven years, they called seven states home. Without a residence of their own, the two would take trips between projects, venturing across the United States and visiting over 17 countries. But then came the pull to put down roots and purchase their first home, a stunner located in a Georgia suburb. At first glance upon entering the Reynolds Lake Oconee cottage, you feel the illusion of a spacious floor plan.
