Washington state-based architect Ross Chapin not only believes that such neighborhoods are still viable, but he also designs refreshingly insightful homes and enclaves to actively combat urban sprawl. “My firm and I strive to create places that nourish the individual, support healthy family relationships, and foster a strong sense of community,” he states. You could say that the Lewis family has created a retreat-like home that reflects the ambience of two coasts. After renovating and living in a Cape Cod-inspired dwelling in Santa Monica, California, they were ready to relocate. So, with three young children and a Labrador retriever puppy in tow, the Lewises headed to the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles. Fortunately, they found a 1950s hillside rancher in the Brentwood area that was buffered by a grove of pine trees and other native vegetation. “After being here for four years, we decided to tear the house down, excavate into the hillside, and build our dream of a California farmhouse,” the homeowner explains. Designer Chris Hutcheson and her husband, John, knew when they pulled up to the quaint 1920s cottage on a side street in Smyrna, Georgia, that it could be their dream cottage. When Barbara and Len Ashford bought their 1920s cottage, the sloping hillside behind the house became Barbara’s canvas for creative expression. “From day one, I was out planting in the garden,” she says. She installed an arbor and an English-style bench as a focal point in front of the existing pierced-brick wall. She also replaced a crumbling garage with a hip roof garden shed that looks so inviting that visitors often ask if it’s a guesthouse. Over time she put in paths, picket fencing, and boxwood hedges to “give the garden shape and structure so I can then go crazy with my flowers,” Barbara explains. A mainstay in gardens across the country during the warm months, there are few flowers as recognizable as the hydrangea. From pom-poms of deep blue to white-budded blooms, these comely flowers take form in many sizes and colors, with three major shapes prevalent across the United States. Lacecaps feature a grouping of tiny flowers encircled by larger, showier flowers. Mopheads, perhaps the most popular shape, are defined by flowers that form an orb of color, peppering bushes of wide green leaves.
