Boasting a variety of functional objects including planters, tableware, and tea sets, Majolica pottery is earthenware covered in a colorful tin glaze. Ancient history, exotic creatures, and agrarian imagery account for popular themes that are sure to include at least one of these five jewel tones: cobalt blue, antimony yellow, iron red, copper green, and manganese violet. Majolica pottery finds its origin in the Italian Renaissance. Italian ceramic artists observed new Spanish imports and adopted their techniques. Molds and three-dimensional pieces were introduced during the 19th century when the Minton company began producing the decorative pottery, debuted at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851. When North Carolina homeowners Maria and Jeff Ingle started dreaming up their third build together, they knew right away they were planning for their forever home. With that in mind, the couple made detailed plans to build a house that they’d not only love to live in, but also one in which they could comfortably gather and spend time with loved ones. The Ingles prepared a list of must-haves, including a living space with an open floor plan, lots of pocket doors, hardwood flooring throughout, and white walls with white trim. “This is my blank canvas and calms my mind,” Maria says. When Fran Morris and her husband, John, moved into their new home in 2009, the interior designer knew that the cottage-style spirit of the house and neighborhood called for a classic approach—and that was just fine with her. “I wanted to use antique reproduction elements to preserve the charm of the area and the look of the house,” she says, noting that her own style is decidedly traditional. Flower farmer Dawn Cosgrove, of Whistling Prairie Flowers, grew up in her family’s backyard garden surrounded by rows upon rows of carrots, potatoes, and zucchini, but she hardly imagined it would be the type of place she’d earn a living. “From the minute I could choose to be outside, I would be found out there—dirt-covered and barefoot, planting seeds, finding worms, and chasing butterflies,” she says. “[And] in 2010 I traded in stilettos and stock markets for rubber boots, chickens, homegrown tomatoes, and the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen.” Dawn and her husband, Adam, are raising their two boys on their second-generation farm in Southwest Saskatchewan, Canada. As an interior designer, Cindy McCord spends her days envisioning each client’s dream home, so when it came time for her and her husband to build their forever home in their beloved Tennessee town, she had a good idea of what she wanted. Having been in the construction business for more than 30 years in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California, Tom and Mary Rose Courtney decided the time had come to build their own home. The couple worked with architect Bob Leese to create a design that was not only unique but also had a traditional feel. The Courtneys were also influenced by one of the South’s premier architects, A. Hays Town, who was famous for his use of salvaged building materials like antique elements and aged wood, and the couple began to gather the historical finds needed to make the project a reality.
