A good friend can have quite an influence on us, and when Betty Joslyn was overcome with the urge to start a peony farm on her property, she looked to a mentor-friend for guidance. After an experiment eight years ago in planting 600 plants, she was amazed at her success and found herself hooked. “I do love it, but sometimes I ask myself, ‘What was I thinking?’” Betty says. The farm is a commercial peony farm, and weddings are sometimes held while the flowers are budding or in full bloom. Guidance is given to potential couples on best dates for celebrations to be held. Like most things that come from an island, the Nantucket lightship baskets first began at sea. In the mid 1800s, the state of Massachusetts commissioned lightships—acting as floating lighthouses—to provide light to traveling ships in the heavily trafficked waters around the dangerous shoals to the south of Nantucket. With not much to do on board the lightships during the daytime hours, the crew kept themselves busy weaving baskets with elements found on the ship both from cargo storage and trade. Due to the seemingly endless hours they had for perfecting their creations, the lightship basket is truly a work of art. Each of these baskets shares the classic characteristics of being woven on a mold, being composed of rattan—otherwise known as cane—and sporting a solid wooden base. The wooden bases…

As you approach the front porch of Julie Forgaard’s seaside cottage, the wooden quarterboard reading, “Why Worry” sets the tone for this New Hampshire family’s idyllic vacation home on the historic island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Each room beyond the welcoming Dutch door hosts a cozy, comfortable place specifically designed for family. The Forgaards purchased the quaint Siasconset cottage in 2009—but their love affair with coastal retreats started long before then. Julie is quick to share that she’s been a beach person all her life. She grew up in New Jersey, spending her summers on the Jersey Shore, and as an adult she has explored nearly all of the New England coasts with her family. Visit Beth and Fred Singer’s three-story guest cottage on Nantucket, Massachusetts, and you may find it difficult to believe that the structure was built in 2008. “The design team was inspired by my client and her great-great-grandfather,” says interior designer Anne Dutcher, who has worked with the Singer family on multiple projects, including the main house that sits alongside the light-filled cottage. “His name was Edwin Amesbury—he was one of six sons, who all became sea captains.” The family history was an important part of the design process, which Anne approached with the intention of preserving the homeowner’s family history and honoring the island itself. Anne Blackwell Thompson’s love story with pressed botanicals started with a magazine ad, when a pair of framed pieces caught her eye and compelled her to track down the artist, Stuart Thornton. An apprenticeship in Italy and a decade later, Anne now spends her days creating beautiful pressed pieces that she hopes will encourage people to bring nature into their homes. “It’s kind of a way of bringing in a memory of a hydrangea that grew in a grandmother’s yard or peonies or irises that were in your bouquet when you were married,” she says. “They’re not necessarily your irises, but it’s a remembrance.” She harvests a wide variety of plant materials from historical gardens and other properties around the country, and while every plant is handled differently, there are…

When Rebecca and David Anderson purchased a 2300-square-foot cottage in Cary, North Carolina, they were looking for an easy weekend getaway from their coastal hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina. “We wanted a second home where we didn’t have to worry about our usual responsibilities and day-to-day activities,” Rebecca says. “To have a place where we could just be a family.” The cottage’s location was also chosen for being close to family in nearby Raleigh, North Carolina. The Andersons called on interior designer Mary Hannah Giebel of Mary Hannah Interiors to help make their house a home. “I was hired right when the Andersons bought their house in 2018,” says Mary Hannah, who became involved in redesigning the cottage for the young family from the start. “The idea was to make…

A childhood filled with summers spent on Nantucket, Massachusetts, sparked a love of growing beautiful things in Craig Beni. But despite his interest in design and horticulture, Craig didn’t follow the traditional path into the field. “I didn’t come at the nursery business from a typical horticulture background,” he says. “Much of it was really self-taught and encouraged by a genuine interest in the subject matter.” That interest eventually led Craig to open the Surfing Hydrangea Nursery, where he now offers residents of Nantucket an extensive selection of plant materials alongside knowledgeable direction and advice. “We’re really quite narrow in focus in that, with a couple of exceptions, we almost exclusively sell plant material,” Craig says. Anna Brakefield grew up on her family’s farm, but she never expected to live there as an adult. That is, until her father called her with a business proposition. He wanted to make sheets—not just any sheets, but heirloom-quality cotton sheets—and he wanted her to help him. Thus began Red Land Cotton, a farm and bedding company named after the fertile soil on the family’s Moulton, Alabama, property. Now, Anna runs the company with her father, Mark Yeager, and her two brothers. The men manage the farm while Anna handles the more creative side of the business, designing and marketing for the brand.
