With a new year comes new opportunities for refreshing your space, and winter is the perfect time to welcome the comforts of home. To help you achieve that, we’ve carefully curated this issue to provide an abundance of inspiration for crafting a true haven from the snowy winds outside. From historic cottages layered with character to new builds designed for comfort, each home you encounter within these pages offers its own distinct take on cozy winter style. Inspired by the beauty of the surrounding nature, one couple designed their vacation home to stand out from the typical lake house. In “A Winter Haven by the Lake,” page 45, the homeowner explains how the natural elements, plentiful gathering spaces, and warm neutral tones were all chosen to create the “rustic elegance”…
Anyone who has traveled the French countryside has undoubtedly been struck by its profound beauty. The picture of understated elegance and impeccable charm, French country style is a look originally inspired by the modest stone farmhouses of southern France. Celebrating the vibrant and beautifully sun-drenched colors of Provence, this abundantly inviting style exudes a kind of relaxed elegance and effortless ease that epitomizes the spirit of the French interior. Cindy Smith Cooper’s French Country with Charming, Timeless Interiors thoughtfully showcases the fact that, modest or majestic, the architectural style and embellishments of a house can vary from region to region, but for the purist, distinctive features, including cobbled courtyards, stone windowsills, and rustic ceiling beams, are sure to lend authenticity and a rural vernacular to any dwelling, no matter the…

No question about it: William Avery Rockefeller II knew how to enjoy life. Even when he decamped to his Upper Saranac Lake retreat in New York, he brought a coterie of friends along to fill his halls with camaraderie and high spirits. By day, they snowshoed deep into the forest or ice-fished on the frozen lake. By evening, or when they needed to warm up, they snuggled by crackling stone fireplaces to sip wine and delve into a riveting book. You can capture exactly the same ambience at The Point, once Rockefeller’s private Great Camp and now an exclusive Relais & Châteaux property on the shores of a glittering lake. The Point is open to guests year-round, but winter is a particularly magical interlude when powdery snow gently carpets the…
After moving across the country from Los Angeles, California, to a cozy little town just south of Nashville, Tennessee, a pair of West Coast transplants (and their cat) found themselves looking for comfort and style while they continued their search for a more permanent home. They scooped up a charming 3,000-square-foot cottage-style retreat in Franklin, Tennessee, to serve as a temporary home they could personalize and enjoy amidst their transition. Nashville-based interior designer Laura Thurman (who is also from Los Angeles) was the perfect lead for the project. “The house is a temporary and transitional home,” Laura says. “That said, we wanted it to be nice and comfortable during [their] stay.” With a long-term goal of turning the home into an executive rental once the homeowners find their forever home,…
When Margaret and Jeff Rickard set out to build a vacation home that would perfectly suit their family’s needs, they didn’t want it to be a typical lake house. “I wanted it to have more of a rustic elegance,” Margaret says, noting that she tends toward a French flair in her designs. To accomplish that, she crafted a space that is perfect for curling up and enjoying the water views—no matter the time of year. “I just wanted it to be warm yet airy and light,” Margaret says, adding that she opted for on-trend, lighter finishes. In the upstairs living area, the vaulted ceiling is planked with natural wood, which provides a glowing contrast to the crisp shiplap throughout the space. The stone fireplace at the center of abundant comfy…
