Slippin’ Southern offers more than 300 unique wooden signs and is continually expanding their inventory as Gregory says, “New Orleans is a library of ideas to pull from.” Gregory has been an artist all his life, and after spending 25 years in Chicago working on advertising campaigns for companies like Hershey’s, Namco, Caterpillar, and McDonald’s, he decided to leave the big city. Creamware was perfected in the mid-1700s as Europe’s economical counterpart to popular but expensive Chinese porcelain. This refined earthenware pottery naturally aquired its name from the creamy color of its appearance. Although many experimenters and developers had a hand in creamware’s birth, Josiah Wedgwood is best remembered for his refinement to and successful marketing of the product. He became known as the “Potter to Her Majesty” after furnishing Queen Charlotte with his creamware line, of which he then proudly (and cleverly) dubbed Queen’s Ware. The majority of creamware is plain, but this versatile pottery was also decorated with transfer print designs, as well as monochrome and polychrome enamel colors. Having a great space to entertain was a top priority for newlyweds Austin and Whitney Lutz when they found their New Orleans cottage in 2009. Built circa 1901, the shotgun-style home, a design popular in the South from the end of the Civil War through the 1920s, is long and narrow with rooms in a line, making hosting a cinch for the outgoing pair. “Austin and I love to have friends over, and because our kitchen is open and adjacent to the den, it is perfect for dinner parties,” Whitney says. Carole’s interest was piqued by the antique candy molds she would see at markets and antiques shops, and she soon began searching them out. First used by candy makers in the 1800s, the molds were made from expensive copperplate. Less expensive tinplate molds came into fashion in the mid-1800s with designs by noted German mold maker Anton Reiche. The years of 1880 to 1930 are considered the glory days of chocolate candy molds, including Santa and other holiday shapes of all sorts, but the most popular shapes were thought to be Easter bunnies and rabbits. The rolling pin is one of the oldest kitchen tools around. Historians say it is depicted in drawings by the Etruscans—that’s long before it was mass-produced in the early 19th century. Today collections of pins are popular wall art for kitchens. In the photo above, rolling pins are attached to bead board and framed to hang. The oldest rolling pins, in the collection displayed at right, are hand-carved from one piece of wood. All the handles vary in shape depending on the designer and the use of the rolling pin. However, the old heart pine cabinets were recycled to use for shelving on the back porch, and “the kitchen sink found a new home in the potting shed,” Charm explains.
