The history of porcelain dates back to China’s Han Dynasty, circa 25 B.C.E. Over the centuries, it has been made into everything from teacups and bowls to countertops and dental hardware. Throughout this history, artists have taken to porcelain with paint and brush. The artwork of Slava Leontyev and Anya Stasenko offers a fresh, imaginative take on the tradition. Leontyev shapes the delicate yet strong porcelain into miniature creatures they lovingly call “the beasts”: snails, hedgehogs, turtles, fish, owlets, baby dragons and other critters. Stasenko then painstakingly paints them using various glazes, transforming the translucent white ceramics into colorful personalities.
