Since seeing a Joan Mitchell retrospective in Baltimore, in 2022, I’ve wanted to create an abstract floral painting. In Florida, where I live, there are many beautiful bougainvillea plants. I was inspired by their amazing magenta shades. Typically, I begin by activating the surface with mark-making, using acrylic paint, graphite pencils and water-soluble Stabilo 3 in 1 pencils. Normally, I work in a triad of colors—plus black, white and raw umber. For this painting, however, I decided on a variety of reds, magentas, pinks, purples, greens and blues—plus black, white and raw umber. I used some pure color and mixed some colors for harmony.
