In 1996, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation began a partnership with the fashion brand Hugo Boss to create what is now one of the most sought-after prizes to a contemporary artist. Since its inception, the Hugo Boss Prize, awarded every two years, has included an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, an accompanying catalogue and a cash award that, in 2020, is $100,000. The award, focusing on innovative work—including conceptual, multimedia and performance art—doesn’t discriminate based on age, gender, race or nationality and is juried by an impressive group of international museum directors, curators and critics.
