ARTIST’S INSIGHT: In 1999, I graduated from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts with a degree in printmaking. After graduation, I didn’t paint, but worked instead in graphic design. In 2012, I began to study watercolor painting. This is the first time I’ve entered an international competition. The koi are swimming joyfully; the bright yellow and red, as well as the white variations, fuse together.
After I made some preliminary sketches to determine the composition, what I used weren’t special skills but common watercolor techniques, with a flat brush for wetting the paper and three rounds of large, medium and small sizes, as well as a thin writing brush for drawing the finer details. Usually, I will wet part of the paper with the brush…
