DEADLINES DRIVE US AT The Artist’s Magazine: every three weeks, we produce a magazine and though the pace is exhilarating, it is inescapable. That’s one reason I love the art of Olga Antonova (“Painting as Meditation ,” page 26) shown on our cover and above. A frequent subject for Antonova is the cup, which has resonance in Old English and Medieval image systems, as a cup/chalice/goblet, derived from the Greek kalyx (shell or husk), represents something empty that will be filled and thus suggests hospitality, celebration, ceremony, generosity and joy; accordingly, the suit of cups in the Tarot deck becomes the suit of hearts. We hope you find in the following pages, in addition to instruction and inspiration, what the cup represents — calm and celebration.
