Michael Hurd, who wrote this month’s feature “Let Freedom Ring” (Page 54), is a journalist, historian, and the director of the Texas Institute for the Preservation of History and Culture at Prairie View A&M University, which is digitizing its historical resources about black Texans dating back 500 years. “I’ve been researching and writing about Juneteenth for over two decades, and with each experience, I still learn something new,” The Woodlands based writer says. “Pleasantly, this was no different.” A former sports writer, Hurd has authored three books, including his latest, Thursday Night Lights: The Story of Black High School Football in Texas.
