Bells is maybe five foot on the sets, and Kelly picks the heat apart, wave by not-quite-convincing wave. John Florence, also in the heat, waits nearly 20 minutes to catch anything and ups the heat’s top score when he does, but looks disinterested and fails to convert. The result is still up in the air when Kelly gets his last ride, and suddenly — there he is. Three round, tight carves, swiftly executed, not too high or low on the face, but right there in what passes at Bells for the steeps. He finishes with an under-the-lip semi-snap, semi-down-carve sorta thing, and comes in to be mobbed on the bottom…
