Boardies were once called trunks, and they had belts. The earliest prototypes of what we’d now call boardies were made by a tiny Japanese-Hawaiian couple named Mr and Mrs Nii on the Westside of Oahu. Elvis wore boardies in 1961 when he took up fake surfing for Blue Hawaii. The white trunks came up to his rib cage, but still managed a sly nod to the as-yet unborn Tom Carroll in the legs. The idea for the snaps and Velcro combination that took Quiksilver into the stratosphere came from Al Green’s early experiments with making wetsuits in 1970. Who has been your biggest shaping influence? Over the years, I’ve worked with shapers like Greg Webber, Luke Short, Chris Goulding, Lee Stacey and Simon Anderson. I’ve ridden their boards at an elite level on tour, so to take that knowledge and translate it into my own designs is a real bonus. It’s a grey morning. People here are waking up with heads foggy as the air around them. It’s Torquay, Good Friday. The Rip Curl Pro has enveloped the town and with it has brought professional surfing and hangovers. There’s no surfing today. It’s windy. And it’s cold. And the ocean is as messy as the nights have been.
