On Saturday June 24, Bells Beach and the Surf Coast of Victoria experienced an epic long-period groundswell. The wave height that day depended on who you spoke to – anywhere between eight and twelve feet would be your answer – big. Too big for most, anyway. The best surfing I’ve ever laid eyes on was during the Young Guns 2 trip to the Mentawais. It was my first big trip overseas, my first time scoring good waves, and my first time seeing Dane surf in real life. It was a real eye opening experience – the best trip I could have wished for at that age. I was about 16. Clay Marzo was a year behind me, but he was so far ahead of the game. As anyone who’s been deep in the barrel at Desert Point after a giant plate of magic mushrooms will tell you… gateways to other dimensions exist. I’ve had the good fortune to go through many. Some, like the 27th dimension (or as it’s known in spirro circles – the land of the eternal orgy with fluro green-skinned three-titted nymphos), are quite nice.
