Project number 174046 is the code name for a new yacht currently being built at Delta Marine’s premises in Seattle. We’re talking about a high performance 174’ with an aluminium alloy hull and composites superstructure. As requested by the owner the LOA must be less than 175’ and the draught must be shallow enough to cruise safely in the Bahamas and Caribbean areas. as for the design work the owner has been working closely with Jay Miner, Chief Naval Architect at Delta, and with Jonathan Quinn Barnett who was already part of the design team when he drew up the exteriors of “ Silver Shalis” with Bill Langan. Dutch yard Royal Huisman has two new projects one is a motoryacht the other a sailing cruiser. The first, Dart 65 sports sophisticated elegant lines which have been developed by a dream team made up by this famed yard’s designers and by Winch Design and Azure Naval Architects. Dart 65 is a smaller version of Dart 80 which was presented in 2015, and like the larger sister ship Dart 65 takes after marine wildlife. This salient feature is highlighted when looking at the silhouette which recalls a dolphin as it reaches maximum height when rising above the water just as the yacht’s mast wants to resemble a whale’s caudal fin. M/Y Namasté, was launched last June and presented at the latest Cannes Festival de la Plaisance. Oceanco from Holland presented the yard’s latest entry Spectrum in the course of Fort Lauderdale’s International Boat Show. This yacht is 102 long, it has been developed with project work from Mario Pedol’s Nauta Design Studio in Italy. Substantial investments were made in R&D in a quest for optimised hull shapes able to take on hybrid propulsion systems on board. Currently the yacht is propelled with a pair of 1,440 KW MTU engines and will also sport 500KW electric engines. Spectrum will therefore offer different solutions accordingly. In times gone yachts were designed in much the same way as ships were, in other words they ensured safe space below decks in a closed shell like space in which all were protected from exposure, from some of the dangers out on deck, and from the fury of the seas in a storm. Naval engineer J.M. Soper designed “Xarifa” which was built at J. Samuel White & Co. Shipyard in Cowes in 1927 for Franklin Morse Singer who was one of the numerous sons of the wealthy Singer American family who made their fortune building sewing machines. Obviously Franklin Singer loved beautiful things money can buy. His beautiful wife had supposedly modelled for sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi when he was tackling New York’s Statue of Liberty. Apparently others claim Bartholdi had drawn inspiration for the statue deploying his own mother Charlotte as model. Two years after having been launched, perhaps because of the Wall Street crash and ensuing recession, Singer was forced to sell the yacht in 1929.
