• THE City of Joburg has vowed to clamp down on the illegal invasion of land and hijacking of buildings, after 23 illegal occupants were evicted from a city-owned property. It is alleged that criminal syndicates are using the national lockdown to take over unoccupied buildings and to invade open spaces and land. “Citizens are urged to heed the warning and refrain from unlawful activities within the City. ART centres across the country are on the verge of closing down. Owners of arts centres across the country complain that the Department of Arts and Culture at provincial and national level has continuously failed to fund them. As a result, most of the arts centres are operating on a zero budget. One of those centres include Wushwini Arts Centre in Durban. Its founder Jerry Pooe, said: “The Provincial Department of Arts and Culture normally funds us with R300 000. I then met with them to complain that the funding is not enough. JUST under 80 students, who recently returned from China, have been given the all clear to return to their families. This follows a 14-day quarantine period at the Birchwood Hotel in Ekurhuleni. The students have all tested negative for Covid-19. This was confirmed by Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Blade Nzimande yesterday. Seventy-six students, from provinces around the country, will return to their families. Four students, who arrived in South Africa at a later stage, will remain at the hotel to complete their 14-day quarantine period. In his address, Nzimande lauded the students for their discipline, saying many had already experienced a lockdown in China. This incident that left Dlulane traumatised happened in Cape Town in September last year. Dlulane opened a case at the Belhar Police Station.
