NORTHERN Cape Public Works MEC Fufe Makatong got a tongue-lashing from the High Court in Kimberley after she pleaded ignorance that her department was in contempt of a longstanding court order. ONE of the country’s biggest retail groups, Spar, is embroiled in a scandal that allegedly involves the running of a ‘white boys club’ and the sidelining of black retailers. The group allegedly forced black retailers out of the business and has also been accused of harassing the retailers to avoid reaching settlement agreements with them. It is also alleged that Spar has shut the businesses and handed them to their white counterparts. More than 10 franchises across Gauteng have been affected. The retailers said the group wanted to use their black economic empowerment (BEE) loans to bail out white retailers and dump them. RESIDENTS of Mayfield in Daveyton are up in arms as they accuse the Ekurhuleni municipality of endangering their lives. This was after the municipality allegedly left a project to stop raw sewage spillage unfinished. Residents said this had put their lives in danger after the municipality dug a big hole next to their houses and left the area. They said that the municipality’s failure to stop sewage spillage that flows into their homes had also put their health at risk. They said they had been living with this problem for years, and that it had turned their yards into a wetland. A man whose divorce has just been granted has written a letter of complaint directed to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Office of the Chief Justice in which he blames the Deputy Judge President of the North Gauteng High Court for the break-up of his marriage. THE head of the Presidential Protection Service, General Wally Rhoode, is accused of ignoring several requests to upgrade Deputy President David Mabuza’s “worn out” car fleet before a long-serving protector lost his life in an accident two weeks ago. SURVIVORS and the families of the 51 victims of the two Maseru massacres have been urged to gather in the Lesotho capital on Friday for the first time in decades. The first Maseru massacre occurred on December 9, 1982, when the then SA Defence Force (SADF) raided houses in the Lesotho capital and killed 42 ANC members and locals. Among those killed were five women and two children. On December 19, 1985, the SADF launched another raid during which six underground ANC operatives and three Lesotho nationals were shot dead.
