Since its unbanning in February 1990, the ANC has had presidents from three groups of freedom fighters, namely Robben Island, exile, and underground.
Nelson Mandela, who belonged to the Robben Island group, was sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage in what is known as the Rivonia Trial. By the time of his release from prison in February 1990, he had served 27 years, the bulk of which was at Robben Island.
Thabo Mbeki, who succeeded Mandela, belongs to the group from exile. Two-and-half years after its banning, in 1962 to be precise, the ANC sent him to the UK to study.
Mbeki, who holds an economics degree from England’s Sussex University, returned to the country in 1990.
