Spring is just around the corner and the thought of warmer weather and brighter days has me itching to get on with all those decorating projects I’ve been putting off over winter. While a new kitchen is on my wish list, it will require lots of time and planning (and cash) so I’m focusing on the speedy and less-spendy updates I can tackle in the meantime. 1. Layer on textures While creamy colours are warmer than white, they need a little help to amp up the comfort factor, otherwise they risk looking flat. Pile on boucle, chenille and knitted fabrics, and finish with a deep-pile rug. 2. Create cosiness with shapely outlines Soft, wavy shapes are soothing and easy on the eye – think rounded furniture, an arched mirror or a curvy vase. Include a few sharper lines for contrast, such as an angular floor lamp or a diamond-patterned rug. 3. Incorporate a metallic accent A little goes a long way when it comes to metallics – the smallest hint will instantly lift a scheme. Pattern clashing may seem a bit intimidating, but with a few tips it’s actually pretty easy. Simply play with scale and stick to a colour palette to avoid it looking chaotic – choose a tonal scheme or two or three contrasting colours that complement each other.
