Drill a test hole in the plaster to check the brickwork is worth stripping. If it’s really damaged, concede defeat and refill the hole. Cover every surface and seal doors to minimise dust. Work methodically across the wall from left to right, hammering and then gently lifting the plasterwork off with a trowel. Remove loose cement or brickwork with a stiff brush, then vacuum the wall. If the removed cement reveals exposed cavities, repoint any gaps to avoid draughts. Blend new cement by dabbing on watered-down chalk paint. 1 Source a large piece of reclaimed wood from your local reclamation yard. Hannah chose oak for hers. 2 Decide on the size you want and, using a circular saw, cut the wood to size, or ask the yard to do it for you if you prefer. 3 Buy some trestle legs – Ikea has a good selection – and attach them to the table top. When we first spotted our barn 13 years ago, we knew its renovation would be a challenge, but we could see the potential to transform it into somewhere that really had wow factor. We were already living in Yorkshire and when we went to view it, one lovely sunny day, we were completely sold by the beautiful views, stretching right across the Airedale Valley in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. 1 Gather material in different colours and patterns – it’s a great way to use up fabric scraps. 2 Cut out a triangle template on stiff card, including a seam allowance (around 1-2cm) on each side. Use the template to cut out two fabric triangles per flag. 3 Place two matching triangles of fabric together, right sides facing, and sew along both diagonal seams, leaving the top edge open. 4 Snip the excess fabric across the pointed end of the triangle, just below the stitches. Don’t worry too much about the original state of a piece of furniture. If it’s solid and you like the shape of it, then it will probably clean up well and look great with a lick of paint or stripped down to the original wood. If you find a chair that needs reupholstering, take your time removing the original fabric rather than ripping it off. Then you can use it to make a pattern and this will help to make the new fabric fit perfectly. If possible, try to ask the homeowner if you want to remove something from outside a house.
