In the week between Christmas and New Year, I settle down with a notebook and make lists of my goals, plans and dreams for the coming year. Some of them come to nothing (one of last year’s was to learn to drive, but I only managed 10 lessons…), but others fly and suddenly I’m moving forward in life! Design-conscious pet beds We all know the sofa is where cats and dogs will ultimately end up, but Made.com has launched its first range of pet accessories, including minimal-chic beds from £29, and copper bowls from £19, to blend seamlessly into stylish decor and at least tempt them to stay in their beds. It could be designer! The streamlined good looks of the…

Originally used for flooring in 16th-century Italian palazzos, terrazzo is a mix of glass, marble and stone chips set in polished concrete, lending itself perfectly to beautiful floor tiles, but also as a motif on softer accessories like cushions or rugs.…
1 Seek a modern retro light Statement lighting will add polish – it’s all about shiny metals and smoked or opaque glass. Go for retro shapes, slimline floor lights and geometric table lamps. 2 Dare to go dark Moody hues on the wall will create a sense of drama. Pair with brass and copper accents in furniture and accessories for highlighting pops of pure polish. 3 Pick a plush velvet piece This fabric instantly raises the style stakes, whether on curtains, cushions or upholstery. Go for graphite grey or jewel tones like emerald, sapphire and amethyst. 4 Add a simple table In a bold, lush look like this, keep the key pieces simple and sleek with a curved glass coffee table like this – then layer on the luxe details…
