The conflict in Ukraine has affected millions of people, and the response to the humanitarian crisis has prompted a response from around the world, including from post offices and stamp collecting communities. The most striking philatelic addition to the unfolding tragedy is the launch of a stamp design competition by Ukrposhta, the Ukraine postal service, which invited Ukrainians to design a stamp showing the defiance against the Russians, with the hope that the challenge will ‘relieve the psychological stress of war’. The Smithsonian National Postal Museum’s new exhibition ‘Baseball: America’s Home Run’ explores America’s national pastime through the unique lens of stamps and mail. The price of Jersey stamps went up recently due to ‘significant challenges’, the cost of sending a local letter is now 56p, a letter to the UK, IOM or other Channel Islands rose to 82p, while letters to Europe and the rest of the world now cost £1.20 and £1.75, respectively. Meanwhile, Guernsey have increased stamp prices too. The cost of a Bailiwick letter is frozen at 50p; the price of a UK letter is now 73p, a letter to Europe is £1, and the price of a letter to the Rest of the World is £1.20. Two stamps from the Faroe Islands provide stunning views of the Northern lights (Aurora Borealis), beautiful waves of colour that light up the night sky and are caused by solar winds and flares. The two stamp designs, featuring photographs of the natural phenomenon, speak for themselves, yet it is fascinating to learn how and why the lightshow appears. The U.S. Postal Service has honoured author and illustrator Shel Silverstein with a Forever stamp featuring artwork from his book, The Giving Tree. Published in 1964 by Harper & Row, the book is about a friendship between a motherly tree and a boy. As the child grows older, the tree gives him its shade, apples, branches and trunk. Michael was brought up and studied on the Isle of Man before embarking on an illustrious career in art and education which now spans more than sixty years. Despite its ‘postage stamp’ size – a mere two-and-ahalf square miles in area – Gibraltar has played some intermittent but dramatic roles in British history. An early tenuous link might be made between the British Isles and the Rock of Gibraltar via Phoenician navigators who visited both during their lengthy trading voyages more than two-and-a-half thousand years ago; bartering rare purple dyes and other exotic Middle Eastern cargoes for Cornish tin ores. Had postage stamps been invented in the BC era the Phoenicians would certainly have used them to aid communication with their home city of Carthage in North Africa. As regular readers will know, February saw the Business Design Centre in Islington host the London 2022 International Stamp Exhibition – originally planned as London 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic, writes Stuart Leigh. In the past we have seen Post & Go kiosks at such occasions from Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar, as well as from Royal Mail, but not this time, as Covid travel restrictions disrupted the plans. It’s a sad story if you start digging around the history of the Congo Free State (1885-1908) and there aren’t many, if any, happy endings to lift the gloom of atrocities perpetrated in the colony under the personal rule of King Leopold II. It’s easy to forget that two sets of stamps were created for use in this Central African country which was supposed to be a humanitarian and philanthropic project. The reality was far more inhumane and really the state was set up for profit. The first stamps issued in 1886 have the profile of King Leopold II but were replaced in 1887 with those with his portrait. When the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie proposed, at its 1935 Brussels Conference, that member nations should set aside one day each year and call it Stamp Day, the motion received enthusiastic applause and vociferous support. Scores of European delegates eager to encourage activities that brought nations together rather to the boiling point of war voted for it. Alas, the realities of life throughout much of the Continent during the next two decades all but ruled out Stamp Days. Delegates returning to their home countries after the 1935 FIP conference probably wondered if they would find even enough postmen exempt from military service to collect and deliver routine mail, never mind run printing machines to produce special issues. One of the previously neglected areas of philately is that of stamps used for the collection of taxes. This had been much more prominent a subject before the First World War when an increasing number of new issues of postage stamps caused collectors to begin to withdraw from revenues, and indeed postal stationery as well, in order to concentrate on postal issues and, progressively over the past century, to one country or a single issue or indeed a single stamp! The United Nations Postal Administration recently issued a definitive stamp to commemorate the birth anniversary of Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan social, environmental and political activist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The stamp features a quote in German: ‘When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and hope’. The €0.85 stamp is part of a series of definitive stamps illustrated by engraver Martin Mörck. Royal Mail recently unveailed four special postboxes to celebrate World Book Day’s 25th anniversary. A new exhibition at The Postal Museum reveals ground-breaking technology that revolutionised Britain and the post forever. The 2022 Congress Medal has been awarded to Michael J Roberts of Huddersfield. Mike’s philatelic life can be traced back to his fourth birthday when he started collecting. He joined Huddersfield Philatelic Society aged eight, and four years later was Junior Representative on that society’s committee. Sixty years later he remains a member having fulfilled a number of committee positions in the intervening years. Mike has proved there is enthusiasm for local societies. As a firm believer in daytime meetings, he proposed establishing West Riding Stamp Club, acting as contact for many years. Interestingly, the Club does not, by choice, have elected officers. The second stamp in a series created from previously issued Guernsey and Alderney stamps and mini sheets, and depicting elements of sustainable forest management, has been released. Guernsey’s ‘Heart of the Forest’ quartet stamp series has been created by Gail Armstrong, an award-winning paper sculptor and illustrator who produces three-dimensional works of art from flat sheets of paper. The stamp theme takes its inspiration from Love Paper, a global campaign which promotes the sustainable and attractive attributes of print, paper, and paper packaging. Austria Post have a long track record of issuing unusual stamps, and their response to the global pandemic has been typically innovative. First we had the coronavirus stamp made of toilet paper, as panic buying gripped many parts of the world; next was the ‘mini FFP2 mask’ stamp which was an embroidered, stamp-sized mask; and now we have the sticking plaster design, intended to encourage vaccinations. A statement on the Österreichische Post website explained: ‘The idea for this original miniature sheet resulted from the imponderables of the coronavirus pandemic and was therefore issued on short notice and without an announcement in the issue programme. RARE PACKET LETTER MARK The recent ‘Worldwide & Great Britain’ sale at Cavendish Philatelic Auctions saw a Cape of Good Hope pre-stamp cover attract interest. The 1818 cover featured the rare oval ‘CAPE OF GOOD HOPE/PACKETLETTER’ datestamp and was sent to London (Huth & Co) and featured a wax seal and London arrival datestamp. The lot description explained that ‘Perhaps fifteen examples of this mark – the only C.G.H. In the early 1900s large international exhibitions were organised throughout Europe and North America to showcase new inventions and economic progress generally, writes Christer Brunström. These huge events attracted millions of visitors eager to learn about the latest novelties. The Franco-Prussian war of 1870 had been a disaster for the French department of Lorraine in the east of the country. By 1907 things had more or less returned to normal and that was what people in the city of Nancy wanted to celebrate by staging a huge international exhibition. The decision was taken in 1907 and after two years of hard work the International Exhibition of Eastern France opened its doors in May 1909. It’s staggering how little has been written in philatelic terms about a man who collected stamps at the highest level and even appeared on stamps, writes Devlan Kruck. King Carol II is best remembered as the King of Romania between 1930 and 1940, who abdicated and lived in exile until he died. It’s even more surprising that you don’t see much philatelic coverage of this legendary collector because he held the famous 1857 Swedish Treskilling Yellow in his collection from 1937 to 1950. In theory, the Panama Canal was such a simple idea. The Isthmus of Panama was just a thin strip of land separating two mighty oceans. If you dug a canal across it, you’d save yourself the long, hazardous journey around the Cape, or the even worse one through the North West Passage. The idea had been talked about for literally hundreds of years when the French-built Suez Canal opened in 1869. Encouraged by its success, the French set up a company to dig a Panama Canal in 1878. It obtained a licence to build and operate the canal from the Columbian Government (Panama was a District of Columbia at that time) And with the celebrated Ferdinand de Lesseps at its head, it soon attracted millions of pounds in public funding.…

Royal Mail have revealed the winners, and subsequent stamp designs, of their ‘Covid Heroes’ competition, which challenged young people to design a stamp highlighting the amazing work played by key workers and others during the pandemic. In Spring 2020, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Royal Mail Chief Executive, Simon Thompson launched a special stamp design competition. A staggering 606,049 entries were submitted from 7,479 schools, helping Royal Mail to secure the Guinness World Records title for Largest postage stamp design competition. Royal Mail then selected 120 regional finalists, from this a special panel of judges, including the Prime Minister, picked 24 regional winners, and the final eight winning designs were personally selected by HRH The Prince of Wales, with the finished stamps approved by Her Majesty The Queen. Postcodes are part of everyday life. They affect everything from communications and identity to house prices and care. Postcodes were trialled in Norwich in 1959, but their story goes back further. The exhibition explains the early postal districts of London, Liverpool and Manchester in the 1850s and 1860s to the modern coding we know today. Tech pioneers Tommy Flowers, Dame Stephanie Shirley CH and Sir Gordon Radley, were some of the brilliant minds working at the Post Office Research Station at Dollis Hill in the 1930s to 60s. Their impact is explored in the new exhibition, from postal mechanisation and postcodes to inventions like Colossus, the world’s first programmable electronic computer, and even hearing aids. The Royal Philatelic Society London has released the second edition of the book Guide to the Postal Stationery of Iraq by Clayton Rubec and Professor Akthem Al-Manaseer. According to the Society, the first 2016 edition has been one of the Royal’s bestselling books, and this second edition has thirty additional pages of new material. The new content includes previously unreported examples of, amongst others, Ottoman postal stationery used in its Iraq vilayets, more British in Occupation and Indian Expeditionary Force postcards and envelopes, and British India sovereign stationery. The cover of the book shows an image of the unreleased (and probably the rarest Iraqi postal stationery item), the 1933 Faisal I 20 Fils orange aerogramme. Royal Mail have increased the price of a 1st class stamp by 10p to 95p and the price of a 2nd class stamp by 2p to 68p. An official statement explained: ‘Royal Mail has considered these pricing changes very carefully in light of the long term structural decline in letter usage and rising inflation. Letter volumes have declined by more than 60% since their peak in 2004/5, and around 20% since the start of the pandemic. ‘Overall, these changes are broadly in line with inflation and are necessary to ensure the one-price-goes-anywhere Universal Service remains sustainable. PostNL, the postal authority for The Netherlands, recently issued the second set in their ‘Typically Dutch’ series, which highlights ‘five sports in which the Dutch excel’. If you’re racking your brain trying to think of Dutch sporting champions, then hockey might just come to mind. The Netherlands male hockey team has won the Hockey World Cup three times and been runners-up on four occasions, whilst the women’s team have tasted World Cup victory an impressive eight times, most recently in 2018). So it’s no surprise that we see a woman hockey player on the six identical postage stamps which make up the sheets. Royal Mail’s footballthemed stamp set serves as an ‘extended highlights’ package of this long-running competition, though some supporters will be more pleased with what is recalled than others. You can’t please everyone, and the design of the stamps is obviously intended to capture the tradition and romance of the FA Cup, as lower league teams play the country’s best sides, and individual heroics are written into the history books. Mermaids are a popular theme with postcard collectors, writes Richard Stenlake, although it is the comic cards that are the favourites with predictable jokes, some too rude for a family magazine like this. This is an inexpensive topic with cards costing between £1 and £3. At about double that price come the mermaid cards of Aden. Although dubbed mermaids these dugongs or sea-cows were hardly oil paintings, but were exhibited to tourists who were probably weirded out by it and resolved to leave Aden ASAP. The hapless lady dugong in our illustration was caught in 1905, stuffed and, bizarrely, adorned with a crucifix. Other dugongs ended up on display in hotels and the local museum. Today these harmless sea mammals, whose closest relative is the elephant, are seeing their numbers…

The sixtieth Spanish National Philatelic Exhibition, Exfilna 2022, is scheduled to take place in September in the city of Irún, in the Basque Country, on the border between Spain and France. The website of the exhibition was recently launched, announcing the organising committee, the regional commissioners, the regulations and the application form for the exhibitors. 600 frames are expected to participate in the exhibition, in which France is this year’s invited country. Exfilna 2022 will take place between 21 and 25 September and is under FEPA recognition.
