Whatever you think of it, guano meant big bucks back in the 1850s, when the waste was most significant export from Peru to Europe. You may be wondering why guano would be an attractive good, put simply the bird by-product was supremely effective as a fertilizer. In the 1840s the Peruvian government negotiated a deal with merchants from Liverpool and France for the export of this soil-enriching manure. It brought about an extraordinary economical and political turnaround from the turmoil and stagnation which had, up until that point, halted development in the capital Lima and across the new Republic of Peru. This stamp, the highest denomination in a 1969 series featuring Soviet aviation, celebrates a less well-known technology race between the two superpowers, to create a supersonic airliner. The plane on it looks a bit like the Anglo-French Concorde – but it isn’t. It is a Tupolev TU-144. The idea for a supersonic passenger jet was first mooted at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, in 1954. Design progressed slowly – a lot of time was spent getting the shape of the wings right – but by 1960, the embryonic Concorde was taking shape in the UK. In that year, news about this reached France, where engineers had been working on a similar project. The two teams linked up. In the short period of December 1839 until May 1840 the postal scene in Britain changed forever. Until that time letters had usually been written on single sheets which were folded and charged to the recipient based upon the mileage covered. Naturally there were variations with local posts and letters of more than one sheet, but generally this was the situation whereby the cost of sending postal items was not conducive to encouraging usage. Additionally, there was misuse of the allowance for cost-free postage and delivery for those who qualified. Briefly, a comprehensive reform of the postal service was agreed and took place, beginning on 5 December 1939 with the first component, a Uniform Fourpenny Post, a short-lived prepaid letter rate that lasted for 36 days until 9 January 1840…

Six new stamps explore key engineering and technical advances that were part of the Industrial Revolution, the chapter in our history which saw the introduction of mechanised production, powered by steam and water, and led to huge social and economic changes in Britain. The set also touches upon the advances of the ‘Electric Revolution’ and the harnessing of electricity, which would bring sweeping changes in communications and daily life. Royal Mail’s primary expert on the stamp issue was Barrie Trinder, author of Britain’s Industrial Revolution: The Making of a Manufacturing People, 1700–1870 and numerous other books on the subject. Also consulted were Professor Iwan Rhys Morus of Aberystwyth University and Professor Gillian Cookson of the University of Leeds. The use of discarded, found and multiples of objects is a fundamental element of Ann Carrington’s practice. ‘Mundane objects like knives and forks, barbed wire, pins and paintbrushes come with their own ready-made histories and associations,’ she says ‘which can be unravelled and analysed if rearranged, distorted or realigned to give them new meaning as sculpture.’ Whilst her father’s stamp collection didn’t quite ignite her passion as a child, Ann later discovered the beauty of stamps and quickly became fascinated by the medium. ‘When I went to art college I was drawn to stamps and coins as subject matter for artwork,’ she says. ‘I wanted to explore the idea that something so familiar like a stamp or coin became almost invisible with familiarity. Materials which are heavy or fragile required transport to carry them across the kingdom and Pigot’s Directory lists no fewer than ten canals which bisected the county, allowing the pottery industry to produce and distribute their goods. The arrival of the Grand Junction Railway in 1833 marked the end of the canal age before the railways too were decimated by the Beeching cuts of the 1960s. The relationship between raw materials, sources of power and the means of transport provided the key which unlocked the Industrial Revolution and we are fortunate as collectors that all of these characteristics can be illustrated through the medium of postal history. AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS PRICES INCLUDE BUYER’S PREMIUM UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED The recent sale at Cherrystone Philatelic Auctions included a Bulgarian error that was only noticed seven years after the stamp was issued. The 1911, 50s ochre and black, centre inverted, was eventually discovered in 1918 by a Nicola Kochanov in Sofia and has since been regarded as a major rarity of this country. According to the auction house there are thirty examples known to exist, all of which are used. SOLD FOR £3,789 Stanley Gibbons recently sold this 1974 7c ‘Tennis’ error for £500. The stamp has the light brown (flesh colour) omitted and is one of twenty of the colour errors thought to exist in mint condition. Today’s young Egyptian collectors take justifiable pride in their country and the accolade it regularly receives around the world for its status as the first to issue postage stamps displaying historical and archaeological subject matter rather than images of monarchs and heads of state. The political, social and economic turmoil Egypt found itself embroiled in at the time makes these stamps even more remarkable. The powerful Ottomans, with an army encamped on Egypt’s eastern border, considered Egypt a province that gave the Ottoman Empire access to Alexandria’s thriving Mediterranean port. In the early years of the last century, the development of airships and aeroplanes went on side by side. Lighter-than-air craft had a longer history. The first channel crossing by balloon was in 1785 and first dirigible balloon (with an engine and steering gear) flew in 1852. Then in 1896, the invention of the petrol engine was a catalyst for progress, with larger craft making longer flights in both the USA and France. However, the man who revolutionised airship design was German: Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. In 1900, he launched LZ1 (Luftschiff Zeppelin1), which was the first airship with a metal frame containing individual gas bags and covered with fabric. It was housed in a floating hangar on the Bodensee (Lake Constance) in southern Germany, which could turn to match…

As chief designer at the Supermarine Aviation Works, a subsidiary of the famous engineering conglomerate Vickers-Armstrong, the skills of Staffordshire lad, Reginald Joseph Mitchell were paramount when it came to creating one of the world’s best short range interceptor aircraft, the Spitfire. The fine design of its elliptical wings meant the aircraft could reach a much greater top speed than many contemporary fighters of the day. Initially, Mitchell had submitted plans for a monoplane Type 224 which took its first flight in February 1934 but the RAF were not impressed and rejected the plane as unsatisfactory. Undeterred, Mitchell continued with his designs working on a private project commissioned by Supermarine to construct an all-metal monoplane.
