For most of my life as a sports fan, I have had a love-hate relationship with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even though I was born and raised an Atlanta Braves fan, I pulled for the Dodgers as a kid because, well, the Braves of the 1970s were pretty awful, finishing near the bottom of the NL West almost every season. A trio of hot sellers on our Top 10 chart and “next 10” list reflect an ongoing appreciation for vintage cards. Vintage? Heck, you can call these antiques. The industry-wide standard for an object to be considered antique is 100 years old. Let’s take a closer look at our charting century-old cards. Two of them feature Honus Wagner, and they sold for prices north of $30,000. One of them was a 1910 Wagner card originally packaged in a box of American Caramel candy. It sold for $35,600 on 60 bids. The 1910 American Caramel set was cataloged as E90-2 by Jefferson Burdick (1900–1963), the man known as the Father of Card Collecting. A month after its purchase by a new owner, Beckett has launched its first European location in Germany. Beckett Media & Collectibles was purchased in December by collectibles company Collēctīvus Holdings. Beckett will grade, label, and slab cards on-site in the European Union. According to Beckett, its grading team has undergone extensive, in-person training at its Texas headquarters to work across different time zones and international borders to provide collectors and customers with grading services. Customers in the European Union can expect faster turnaround times, added savings on shipping, and a closer card submission process through Beckett’s on-site grading. “While companies scramble to open up submission centers in Europe, we are bringing our entire operation to the continent,” Beckett CEO Kevin Isaacson said. “We’re on a mission to serve our…

If you're reading this you're most likely an active participant in this great hobby. I tend to believe the majority of the people in it are honest, decent people with moral fortitude. Unfortunately, even if you are new to the hobby, you are probably well aware that statement doesn’t apply to everyone across the board. From burglaries, thefts at card shows, counterfeiting, trimming and altering, CAT scans, and breakers switching cards or not sending someone what they're entitled to are just some of the indiscretions that occur daily. Unfortunately that doesn't even cover everything on the dark side of the hobby. When the 2024 Topps Chrome Update set was released in November of last year, an 11-year-old collector from Los Angeles knew immediately that he just had to have a box. So, despite the $200 price for a hobby box, “I started begging my mom for it for Christmas,” he wrote in his journal. When he feared the price might rise before then, “I went into full beg mode,” he wrote. Sure enough, by Black Friday, the price had soared to $350 per box and his parents suggested he might want to choose something else for Christmas, which made him “very, very sad.” When his parents relented and purchased a box for $320, he was “so excited!!” and couldn’t wait for Christmas. More than 500 prized Michael Jordan basketball cards were found in two large shoeboxes inside a home in Tucson, Ariz., a collection valued at more than $100,000. The rare cards originally belonged to an Arizona collector who embarked on a mission to acquire every Jordan refractor card produced from the 1990s to early 2000s.
