LEADING OFF When I attended my first National Sports Collectors Convention shortly after joining SCD in 2021, I marveled at the number of big-name autograph signers scheduled. There were dozens of Hall of Famers, but to me, one name stood out above all the rest. Pete Rose. THE HOBBY IS THE PEOPLE I waited a couple of months to write this because I didn't want to add to the onslaught of National Sports Collectors Convention coverage right after the event in late July. I also wanted to let it all soak in. The National is always a great event, but when it's at a venue that is drivable for me, it's a plus as I can avoid a plane ticket and operate on my schedule. Shohei Ohtani spent the 2024 season obliterating major-league pitching, posting baseball’s first-ever 50/50 season. His 54 home runs and 59 steals (in 63 attempts!) are mind-boggling, but they were hardly the extent of the damage during his historical season. Ohtani also batted .310 with 197 hits in 636 at-bats, scored 134 runs to lead the majors and drove in 130 runs to lead the NL. He led baseball in total bases (411) while pacing NL hitters in on-base percentage (.390) and slugging percentage (.646). Ohtani turned 30 in July but showed no signs of peaking. My personal collecting projects involve building sets. But I am also fascinated at what others collect, whether it is a super collection of a single player, Hall of Famers, or every player for the team that drives their fandom. As the 2024 World Series approaches, my thoughts move toward cards that commemorate those postseason games that have provided us with some unforgettable memories. There have been many different iterations of cards from the Fall Classic, including the Fleer set from 1970 as well as recent Topps Now cards issued immediately after big games and big moments.
