I’ve been a baseball fan for as long as I can remember. From the time I smacked rocks with a wooden bat in my grandfather’s driveway until I was old enough to play Little League, I had a bat, ball or glove in my hand. I loved football, too, dashing around my bedroom or backyard with a pigskin tucked under my arm. But my deepest sports passion was basketball. The rare, iconic 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth rookie card hit the auction block for the first time in more than a decade, with Robert Edward Auctions estimating it could sell for $10 million or more. Graded SGC VG 3, the card is one of only 10 examples in existence and the highest grade to appear at auction in more than 15 years, according to REA. The card is up for bid in REA’s Fall Auction, which runs through Dec. 3. It had a high bid of $5.2 million through Nov. 29. The card is Ruth’s first-ever trading card and features the 19-year-old pitcher with his hometown Baltimore Orioles of the International League. When I bought my home in 2006 I didn't think I'd buy another one in less than 20 years, but last month I did just that with the purchase of Mickey Mantle’s childhood home in Commerce, Okla. Clearly, I jest … sort of. I received an email from Rally, an alternative asset investment company, with an early offering of the aforementioned Mantle boyhood home. They were offering 47,000 shares with an IPO market cap of $329,000 — at $7 per share, of course. Let's talk about the significance of the house itself, located at 319 South Quincy Street.
