An Ohio man has been charged with the theft of more than $87,000 of sports cards from a dealer at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlantic City. Russell Porter of Willoughby, Ohio has been charged with second-degree theft by unlawful taking and second-degree theft by deception, according to the Atlantic City Prosecutors office. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison. According to the Atlantic City Police Department, the theft occurred on July 30 at the Atlantic City Convention Center when the alleged suspect walked away with $87,800 worth of sports cards from the booth of Gizmo’s Sportscards. As expected, the National Sports Collectors Convention will return to Chicago in 2023, followed by the 2024 show moving to Cleveland. The NSCC Board of Directors announced Sept. 1 that the 2024 show, which will be under new management, would be held July 24-28 at the I-X Center in Cleveland. The show will return to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Ill on July 26-30 next year and return to Rosemont again in 2025. The hobby’s largest show will return to Cleveland for the first time since 2018. The show was also held in Cleveland in 2014, 2009, 2007, 2004, 2001 and 1997. Nearly 100 of football’s greatest players and coaches celebrated the enshrinement of the Class of 2022 into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Aug. 5-7. The class honored Tony Boselli, LeRoy Butler, Richard Seymour, Bryant Young and Dick Vermeil as the five living members who attended the festivities in Canton, Ohio. Art McNally, 97, the first referee to be inducted, was unable to attend. Honored posthumously were wide receiver Cliff Branch and linebacker Sam Mills.
