Leaf Trading Cards took the unprecedented step of filing a lawsuit against a professional athlete for breach of contract, forcing Dallas Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb to quickly fulfill his autograph-signing agreement. According to the suit, Leaf alleged that Lamb did not fulfill his contract to sign cards for the company, leaving Leaf “unable to fulfill orders from customers who had received redemption cards that would be exchanged for a card signed by Lamb.” A day after news of the suit broke, however, the company announced that Lamb had signed and returned all the required cards. Way back in January 2020 — just before COVID disrupted all of us — we reported on the sale of an ungraded 2019 Bowman Chrome signed Superfractor card of Adley Rutschman for a shocking price: $23,088 on 94 bids. It was a 1-of-1 card, so that helps account for the hefty figure. Even so, it was a jaw-dropping sale because Rutschman had exactly 130 at-bats in the low minor leagues at that point. As we know, Rutschman was and is deemed a can’t-miss prospect. A 6-foot-2, 216-pound switch-hitting catcher, he starred at Oregon State from 2017-19 by hitting .352 with 28 HRs in 644 at-bats. Several rare 1933-34 Goudey cards from the Manny Gordon Collection sold for more than six figures in the Spring Rarities Auction at Memory Lane Inc. Gordon, a renowned New York jeweler and vintage card collector, owned one of the hobby’s most impressive collections of rare Goudey cards. His collection, which highlighted Memory Lane’s spring auction following his death from COVID, netted more than $2.7 million. Three Goudey cards from the collection were the top-selling cards in the auction, each selling for more than $500,000. A 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #53 (PSA 8) sold for $942,000, a record for the grade, while a 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92 (PSA 9) went for $672,000. A 1933 Ruth #149 sold for $510,000.
