There’s nothing quite like opening a pack of trading cards and pulling your favorite player or the hot rookie whose card keeps going up in value. There’s also nothing comparable to the letdown of pulling the same, marginal player and the same worthless card over and over and over again. As a kid, there was nothing more deflating than buying a new pack of cards, ripping it open and being greeted by the smiling — or frowning — face of a light-hitting shortstop. This year’s Super Bowl gave us two teams that, let’s face it, traditionally haven’t driven collectors wild. Kurt Warner is a Hall of Fame quarterback but he spent only six years with the Rams — exactly half of his career. Two of the best running backs in NFL history, Eric Dickerson and Marshall Faulk, both spent time with the Rams, but it wasn’t terribly long (five years and seven years, respectively) for either. It’s been two years since the tragic death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, but his legacy still shines bright thanks, in part, to the soaring value of his trading cards. Another example emerged when a rare 1997-98 Bryant card sold for $2 million — a record for a Kobe card and one of the highest-selling basketball cards of all time. The private sale of the 1997-98 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Emerald card was brokered by PWCC Marketplace. Shaquille O’Neal’s deep appreciation for basketball history and the pioneers who paved his way was never more apparent than following George Mikan’s death in 2005. Mikan, the NBA’s first transcendent superstar, had fallen upon hard financial times during the later years of his life because of deteriorating health, soaring medical bills and a paltry basketball pension. Jackie Robinson was a trailblazer, making baseball history 75 years ago when he broke the MLB color barrier in 1947. It is only fitting that Robinson and his legacy are still breaking records on the sports collectible market. A ticket stub from Robinson’s 1947 MLB debut — one of only seven known to exist — sold for $480,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction. It was the highest price ever paid at auction for a ticket to a sporting event. Robinson was one of two baseball immortals to make history during the Heritage Auction. When NBA fan Michael Cole couldn’t find anyone to go with him to the Oct. 26, 1984 game between the Chicago Bulls and Washington Bullets at Chicago Stadium, he bought a ticket and went by himself. That decision now seems like one of the best moves of his life. A young player named Michael Jordan made his NBA debut that night, scoring 16 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out seven assists in the Bulls’ 106-93 win. Thirty-seven years later, Cole sold the ticket to Jordan’s NBA debut for a record $468,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction. In celebration of the NBA’s 75th season, the league convened a blue ribbon panel of media, players, coaches and administrators to choose an all-time team. This is the fourth time in history the league has done this, with all-time teams being named to coincide with the league’s 25th, 35th and 50th anniversaries as well. This 75th squad includes four players who were named to each of the previous all-time teams: George Mikan, Bob Cousy, Bill Russell and Bob Pettit.
