Everybody remembers the “Pine Tar Game” of 1983 involving George Brett, Billy Martin and umpire Tim McClelland, but here’s a story about another bat with pine tar that you probably haven’t heard about. Some time ago, Brett, the Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer, gave former teammate Mike Boddicker one of the last bats Brett had ever used in a game before retiring after the 1993 season. THAT JORDAN CARD — Where were you in the fall of 1986? Wherever it was, you’ll likely have one regret after reading this item: “Why, oh why wasn’t I buying up hordes of Fleer basketball cards?” In advance of the NBA’s 1986-87 season, Fleer entered the hot hoop market by acquiring a license and putting together a no-frills set of cards. They were the standard size—2.5 x 3.5-inches, and the design was colorful, with those eye-catching red, white and blue borders. The photography was middling, at best; too many of the images appear muddy. The checklist, too, was modest. Judy Burk Judith (Judy) H. Burk, an award-winning University of Pittsburgh graphic designer, successful sports memorabilia entrepreneur and dedicated church leader, died Feb. 26. The Sewickley Twp., Pa., resident was 75. Judy’s passing ended a courageous four-year quest to overcome the effects of a medical procedure that left her almost completely paralyzed. She died in the arms of John Burk, her husband of 45 years, and in the presence of Bob Green, her pastor. Although Judy always considered herself a native Pittsburgher, she was born on Aug. 10, 1944, in Long Beach, Calif. In the mid-1960s, she launched her award-winning graphic design career at the University of Rochester and later joined the staff of Pitt’s Department of News and Publications.
