Congratulations go out to Mariano Rivera, Roy Halladay, Edgar Martinez and Mike Mussina for being elected to be part of the Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2019. All four players are deserving of the honor. Before the results were announced, there was a lot of speculation as to whether Rivera would become the first player to ever be a unanimous selection. With all the great players who have played the in the majors, it is hard to believe that no other player had achieved that honor. Some of the blame for this has to be placed on the sportswriters who vote. Oftentimes stories circulate that speculate some sportswriters don’t vote for certain players because the player had an adverse relationship with the media during their career. And because of…

Stiff-arming a would-be tackler; a receiver keeping a laser-like focus on an incoming pass; a quarterback about to toss a tight spiral or perhaps a wobbly pigskin. All of those images, and many others, have appeared on occasion on vintage football wax pack wrappers, but, let’s face it, in most cases, the best treatment those wrappers experienced was getting wadded up and tossed with a wobbly trajectory toward the trash can. Bob Swick decided early on to bring a certain different destiny to the mildly waxy feeling packaging that once cradled the football player’s cardboard images of their time. “I first bought packs in 1965, so I had ’65 Topps and Philly (Philadelphia Gum) wrappers since I was a kid,” Swick said. Long-time baseball fans know there have been a number of great eras (and ERAs) throughout the history of the game. The 1920s and 1930s would have stood out if the only prominent player was Babe Ruth, but as the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown clearly shows, that isn’t the case. The early 1920s was an important time concerning the future of the game following the Black Sox scandal. Say it ain’t so, Joe. A trade of Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees was exactly what the game needed to establish the momentum that has brought it to the 21st century. While vintage wrappers often met a dustbin destiny, a relative few were saved, of course, but some of the classic wrappers have been reprinted—and the counterfeit ones that I have seen look like the real thing, including believable folds and creases. Noticing some mid-1960s football wrapper replicas on eBay in the past two months I messaged the seller and inquired about how to tell the difference between his listing and authentic wrappers, since the photos sure looked like the real thing and there did not appear to be any “reprint” reference of any kind on the wrappers themselves. His response? “The paper is thicker.” Yikes. Buyer beware. But, to give the seller credit, they did state upfront the wrappers were replicas and they only sold for $5-$10 each. So, if…

J.D. Gibbs J.D. Gibbs, son of Joe Gibbs and co-founder of Joe Gibbs Racing, died Jan. 11. He was 49. J.D. Gibbs served as president and later co-chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing. Prior to that he was a tire-changer for the organization and part-time driver. Bob Kuechenberg Former Miami Dolphins guard Bob Kuechenberg died on Jan. 12. He was 71. Kuechenberg joined the Miami Dolphins in 1970 as a free agent and played with the team until 1983. He started every game for the Dolphins team that went 17-0 in 1972. The following season he started 16 games as the Dolphins repeated as Super Bowl champions. He is a member of the Dolphins’ Honor Roll. Suppose you want to own a vintage Babe Ruth baseball card. You could easily spend $6,000 for a mid-grade copy of one of his 1933 Goudey cards, which would have his photo on the front and bio on the back. Or, for around $800, you could buy a 1932 Yankees World Series program, which would also have a photo of Ruth somewhere within its pages, and his bio – as well as photos and bios of his teammates, too. Sports programs makes a nice alternative for the collector who craves vintage sports memorabilia, but doesn’t have the discretionary income for a Mickey Mantle game-worn jersey or a Babe Ruth game-used bat, or even baseball cards from those two legends. Sal Paolantonio once called Lionel Taylor one of football’s all-time “most-underrated” receivers. George “Papa Bear” Halas called Taylor “My boy.” Today, lean and 83 years of age, the once-gifted AFL receiver still has a good memory – and a good sense of humor. Heck, he calls himself, “the original LT.” (Sorry, Lawrence Taylor and LaDanian Tomlinson.) It’s been 50 years since he last caught a pass in a pro football game. Back in 1960, the Denver Broncos, who won the first-ever AFL game played, and Taylor were a good match. Taylor had 12 touchdowns in his first season with the blue and orange and hauled in 92 passes. It’s not the first time you’ll read a story like this – and it surely won’t be the last: A longtime collector passes away, leaving behind a magnificent collection his widow – or children – need to find a home for. When former Rio Rancho (N.M.) police officer Larry Tatum passed away at the age of 65 in September 2013, he left his widow, Lea Stoffer-Tatum, with a huge collection of baseball cards.
