EVERY MORNING, RAIN or shine, Monsieur Bruno and Madame walked to the café where Madame worked. “Bonjour,” said their friends along the boulevard, and Bruno wagged his tail in reply.
At the café, Bruno sniffed under every table and chair for leftover scraps of jambon. Bruno loved ham more than any other food in the whole world. When he found a scrap, he would fling himself down on top of it.
Bruno didn’t blink when a customer ordered a salad. But when he heard “ham sandwich,” Bruno padded over to wait patiently until someone noticed him.
And someone always did. “A bit of jambon, Monsieur Bruno?”
Bruno shuffled his paws, ready for the toss of a slender sliver. Snap! The delicious morsel magically disappeared.
