ONCE UPON A time a boy named Song Dingbo set out from the village of Nanyang to visit the town of Wan. Along the way he encountered a hungry ghost. “Say your prayers, mortal. I am going to eat you!” the ghost howled. Song Dingbo was terribly frightened, but he kept his wits and said, “You’re mistaken. I’m no mortal. I’m a ghost like you.” “You don’t look like a ghost to me.” “That’s because I’ve only been a ghost for three days,” Song Dingbo said. “I’ll probably look more like you when I’m older.” “Where are you going now?” the ghost asked. “I’m going to Wan. “YOU’VE GOT PUNKY’S invitation, right?” Dandelion Pinkley asked her brother, Doodlebug. “We need it to get in.” She stared nervously at the sign draped over the garage door in their cousin Punky’s backyard. It read “Garage of Ghouls—Enter at Your Own Risk!” Doodlebug, Dandelion, and their friends Bog and Miko planned to go inside together. “There’s safety in numbers,” Dandelion kept repeating. Punky Pinkley was older than they were, and on Halloween he tried to scare the living daylights out of anyone he could—especially measly little cousins. FOR CENTURIES, PEOPLE did. Early maps pictured the oceans alive with bizarre animals: bearded whales, sea serpents, and devil fish among them. Many of these “sea monsters” resembled actual creatures that we now know live in the watery deep. The sea scene above is based on a drawing made in 1048. Look closely at the fantastic creatures.
