A GRAND START

Rinna Stalcup has always enjoyed the scenic drive from Mobile, Alabama, to the Grand Hotel in Point Clear. Nestled among majestic 100-year-old live oaks along the southeastern tip of Mobile Bay, the historic resort has been a favorite family getaway for years. “When you drove onto the grounds of the hotel, there was a space called the Grove,” she recalls. “I told my husband, ‘If they ever build here, this is where we want to be.’” No sooner had the Stalcups finished renovating their longtime Mobile home than the opportunity arose to build their dream home at the Grand. BRIGHT FUTURE

With a little bit of color and a lot of shine, designer Catherine Pringle restored the grandeur of yesteryear to this Montgomery, Alabama, Tudor. Homeowners Katie and Wesley Britt hired Catherine to bring back the luster to their newly purchased diamond in the rough. “Built in 1915, this home has some beautiful architectural details,” Catherine says. “Katie and Wesley wanted to highlight them, lighten them up, and make everything young and fresh.” Catherine played up the house’s classic elements—built-in cabinetry, crown molding, original windows, and ornately detailed fireplaces—with a coat of ivory paint, then illuminated the exquisite features by replacing every light fixture. “Changing the lighting made the rooms feel more current,” she says. Colored in crisp whites and grays with notes of unexpected vibrancy throughout, this Texas family residence was designed to reflect the dynamic characters that dwell within it. “The client has a very quiet and refined aesthetic, which is sometimes at odds with having four rambunctious kiddos,” explains designer Laura Umansky. “Our goal was to create a beautiful, tailored sanctuary for the homeowner while using performance pieces that easily hold up to a family of six.” To ready the structure for Laura’s vision, the team began by painting the entire house in the refreshing neutral palette and refinishing all its floors with the help of Houston-based Schenck & Company. For some homeowners, new construction can feel daunting—so many blank spaces, such boundless possibility. Not so for Daphne and Alistair Harding-Smith. By the time the last nail had been hammered into their custom-built Birmingham abode, Daphne had zeroed in on the look she wanted: a warm, approachable take on transitional style, with sturdy surfaces that would suit the couple’s busy lives and three children. The family of four envisioned a sophisticated yet inviting abode for creating heartfelt memories before their two teenage children went to college. Taking a cue from the Metwallis’ joyful personalities, Traci designed a refined home that teems with color. This north Alabama family of four—a couple, their teenage daughter, and a grandmother—love nothing more than enjoying each other’s company in the comfort of their home. But hampered by an inefficient floor plan that left them with a cramped space in which to gather, they felt the closeness had become a bit too pronounced. Designer Beverly Farrington set about giving some structure to the home’s loosely laid-out core while expanding the amount of living space for the family to spend time. “The house was so open that it needed to have more warmth,” she says.
