1 Rainbow Bright A painted piece of scrap board makes an ideal canvas for this easy art—perfect for a playroom or even an office. A few dots of hot glue are all it takes to secure a pretty pattern in place. Use a color wheel to build a rainbow, or consider a monochromatic masterpiece to complement your color scheme. 2 Can You Dig It? Update a past-its-prime circa-1970 dresser with a new coat of paint and shiny hardware. Remove the hardware, and set aside. Using sandpaper, rough up the surface a bit, then apply primer and high-gloss paint in a happy color. (Super-high-gloss trim and door paint works especially well.) Aspiring designers or architects will love making their house their own with wrapping-paper siding, cardboard shingles, and windows and doors trimmed in white electrical tape. After adding a fresh coat of paint and shelves they custom- built for the space, John and Sherry decided a clothespin light would be a fitting crowning touch to their cheerful laundry room. To begin, they installed an inexpensive light kit from IKEA. Then they got to work constructing a cylindrical shade out of wire fencing, which they secured with craft store wire. The wire shade got a coat of white gloss spray paint, and then once dry, they clipped on clothespins in a zigzag pattern. PAPER LIGHT p. 15 Designed by Katherine Tucker MATERIALS 13 small gusseted paper bags Hole punch Double-sided tape Lamp base Low-wattage compact fluorescent bulb (10 watts or less) Jute string Scissors DIRECTIONS 1. Fold the bottom of a bag in on itself, and cut above the lower fold to remove the bottom. 2. Cut the top of the bag to form a petal shape. Punch a hole about ¼ inch from the bottom. Repeat with remaining bags. 3. Apply tape to the outside to connect the sides of the bags. Thread the jute through the punched holes, and tie a knot. 4.
