It seems there is always something to celebrate at Celebrate magazine, but this month we have double the reason—two new staff members. Sidney Bragiel, our new editorial assistant, will be sharing her creative spirit and research skills to help develop party ideas for our pages. We also welcome Brett Bralley, our new assistant editor, who will be writing stories to inspire you to plan and host your own celebrations both big and small. Since it’s summer, we’re celebrating outdoors. There’s a picnic just right for couples off to an evening concert. There’s a pool party for the kids and a patriotic cookout for the entire family. A splash party with a fishy theme is a cool way to celebrate a summer birthday for toddlers and ’tweens. Our party is a fun gathering with food and favors directed toward the younger set. At this age, no one can sit still for long, so a swim and splash seems ideal entertainment. Offering floaties or water wings may help some young guests feel more secure in the water, but of course that doesn’t take the place of watchful eyes. With all the activity, hunger and thirst set in quickly, so have your fish food ready for this school of guppies. Doubling as party favors and graduation gifts, jelly watches in hot colors inspired the whole party, themed around time and a bright color palette. The warm spring weather beckoned us outdoors, so we covered round tables with white cloths and fresh and easy decorations. Antique sap buckets filled with 8-inch pots of monkey grass from a local garden shop took center stage at each table. We placed bright gerbera daisies in floral water picks and placed them in the grass to complete each arrangement. Scrapbook paper added touches of festivity to the tables. We used 12x12 sheets in solid colors as place mats and crafted place cards from colorful patterned paper. Orange Pops Makes approximately 1 dozen pops 4 cups orange juice, divided 3 cups frozen whipped topping, thawed Arrange 12 (½ -cup) disposable cups on a rimmed baking sheet. Pour ¼ cup orange juice into each cup. In a medium bowl, whisk together remaining 1 cup orange juice and whipped topping. Spoon into cups, smoothing top. Tightly wrap rimmed baking sheet with plastic wrap. Cut a very small slit in plastic wrap directly over center of each cup. Place a wooden craft stick in cup through slit in plastic wrap. Summer is here, and fun abounds! Thinking back to my childhood, I remember summer as a time of no school, plenty of ice-cold lemonade to drink, swimming in our little plastic blow-up pool in the backyard, and playing outside until the lightning bugs (fireflies) were flashing. Our little pool was the social center of the neighborhood. Coupled with playing in the sprinkler, it made for great fun. Prepare Oasis by soaking in water. Put the wet oasis in the pot, and trim so it extends about 1 or 2 inches above the rim of the pot. 2. Trim carnation stems to about 2 inches. Mai Tai Makes 6 to 8 servings 4 cups limeade 4 cups pineapple-orange juice 1 cup dark rum 1 cup light rum 1 cup orange curaçao ¼ cup almond syrup Garnish: orange slices, pineapple wedges, maraschino cherries In a large pitcher, combine limeade, pineapple-orange juice, dark rum, light rum, curaçao, and almond syrup. Kim Stoegbauer had her real estate license by the time she was 18 and worked in the field until the market took a downturn. Fortunately, for partygoers everywhere, the downturn led to an upturn in Kim’s interest in invitation design. Her work was quickly in demand, and she couldn’t keep up . . . and keep sane. Gingered Honeydew Mist Makes 6 drinks 2 cups Ginger Simple Syrup (recipe follows) 2 cups sake 1 cup honeydew puree Ice 1½ cups ginger ale Garnish: frozen honeydew balls and fresh mint In a large pitcher, combine Ginger Simple Syrup, sake, honeydew puree, and ice. The first time Daniel and Nicole Tittle met, it was just another day at work.
