I come to life when the first cool breeze blows through the trees. I am even known to have a party when I spot the first yellow leaf of fall! It is invigorating to see the colors of foliage during this time. You guessed it—fall is my favorite season. There is something about the aroma of apples cooking, pumpkin pies baking, and scrumptious dishes made from fruits of the season that makes me happy. Couple that with a brisk evening, and I am in heaven. Also, football season begins and consumes us all. Tailgating has become a tradition all over the country. It all began with a wedding. In October of 1810 Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony- Hildburghausen. They invited the citizens of Munich to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates. In honor of the crown princess the fields were named Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s fields”). The locals abbreviated the name to “Wiesn,” and because the festival is still celebrated in the same fields, Weisn has become synonymous with Oktoberfest. Today, Oktoberfest is the largest festival in the world, with some 6 million visitors from a variety of countries. If Munich is a little far to travel for a festival, you might want to visit Cincinnati, Ohio, home of the largest Oktoberfest in the United States and second in the world only to Munich.…

In the beginning I found it difficult to enjoy my own parties, because I worried and fretted everything wouldn’t be perfect. But now I’ve learned that if there’s a mishap, it’s OK. It’s just one of the party memories. Autumn is my favorite time of year, and I start decorating for our annual party early. Cornstalks from our garden anchor the fence posts, with bright golden mums and pumpkins at the base. I use pumpkins everywhere in our décor, for they immediately announce fall is here. Cheese Ball Makes 10 to 12 servings 5 cups shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese 2 cups shredded smoked Cheddar cheese 1 cup mayonnaise 3 tablespoons minced garlic 3 cups toasted chopped pecans, divided 1 cup chopped green olives 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce In the work bowl of a food processor, combine cheeses, mayonnaise, and garlic. They carpooled to school, and their families were friends for years. But romance didn’t blossom for Celia and Michael until each had gone to college—Celia to Georgia and Michael to Auburn. Jo Anna Cassady didn’t always create sprites, but she has always sought creative outlets to express her artistic talents. She’s an interior decorator by trade, but about 10 years ago, she was inspired by the copper work an artist friend was designing. Jo Anna tried her hand at it but decided copper wasn’t her medium. She began playing with readily available elements from the garden and came up with her first creatures. She called them sprites because she thought of them as mischievous garden fairies. The sprites were originally quite small and simple. She gave them to friends and sold a few at a handmade-art show. Apple Galette Makes 1 tart (6 to 8 servings) 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced* 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon Rustic Pie Dough (recipe follows)** Garnish: toasted sliced almonds Preheat oven to 350°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside. In a medium bowl, combine apples, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon, tossing to combine. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 10-inch circle (1/4-inch thick). Place apple mixture in the middle of circle, leaving a 4-inch border around fruit. Fold border over fruit in an overlapping pattern, pressing gently to adhere folds of dough. Transfer galette to prepared baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Chocolate-Coated Apples Makes 15 apples 1 (24-ounce) package chocolateflavored candy coating* 1 (24-ounce) package vanillaflavored candy coating 15 assorted apples 1 (11-ounce) package caramel bits 2 tablespoons water Assorted chopped nuts In separate large, microwave-safe bowls, microwave candy coating on High in 30-second intervals, until melted, approximately 11/2 minutes. Insert a stick into top of apple. Roll apple into melted candy coating, rewarming coating as necessary. Place on parchment paper or wax paper to dry. Once dry, drizzle with caramel or melted chocolate, and decorate as desired. In a medium, heavy-bottom saucepan, combine caramel bits and water. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking often, until melted. Dip apples in same manner as for chocolate-coated apples. Place on parchment to dry. Decorate as desired. Our dinner is inspired by Debe Henry’s annual autumn event. “It isn’t often friends get to see each other all together and all at once,” she says. With many of her friends and family out of pocket or under obligations during summers and holidays, autumn provides a perfect time to bring everyone under one roof. Twisted Twigs Things to gather: Fishbowl vase Water Clippers Floating candles Twigs Remove leaves from the twigs. Place the twigs inside the vase, bending and twisting them so they fit close to the sides. Fill the vase with water, and then add a floating candle. Candle Wreath Things to gather: Floral foam wreath form Clippers Flowers Prepare the foam by soaking it in water. Cut the stems of the flowers to about 2 inches in length. Starting with the largest blooms, insert flowers into the foam. Fill in with the remaining flowers. Use the wreath alone, or place the Twisted Twigs arrangement (opposite page) in the center.
