Douglass Theatre Though born the son of a former slave, Charles Douglass became a millionaire through diligence and hard work, first with a bicycle repair business, then as the director of the Georgia Savings and Loan Company. After Douglass and his wife, Fannie, attended many performances at Macon’s Grand Opera House, he soon felt called to open a venue to showcase African-American talents.
