MANY YEARS AGO, I entered into the world of publishing with magazines that celebrated something I loved (and still do): stitching. Just Cross Stitch and Sampler and Antique Needlework Quarterly were my first magazines, and their success paved the way for other publications and more opportunities to share my passions, including the Southern lifestyle. Southern Lady is a place where tradition meets today, and the pages focus on the beautiful things in life: family, friends, and ways to make every day special. In this issue, we focus on Old World inspiration and modern interpretations. We visit beautiful Winter Park, Florida, and meet delightful author Karen White. We want to fluff our nests, to refresh areas that could use a little perking up. Decorative pillows are a great way to add color and interest. While there are plenty of ready-made cushions, why not stitch a one-of-a-kind creation? Th is project is made even easier by using cloth napkins; the variety of materials and patterns is virtually endless— and they are already hemmed. For our napkin pillow, we chose a vibrant ikat pattern featuring warm tones that can brighten up neutral living spaces. ?? ????????, we sought out little nooks and crannies to hide away with the latest Nancy Drew mystery and a pilfered cookie or two. As adults, we still harbor that desire to slip away—to read or knit or daydream—if only for a few stolen moments in of the window, then build a seat in between. Our friends at Pate-Meadows Designs turned this little cubby into a cozy spot for relaxing by stitching a tailored cushion from a beautiful linen fabric from King Cotton Decorator Fabrics. They trimmed it in rust piping, then created “bows” with buttons in a matching hue. have you ever visited a place just because you liked the name? Mount Dora was like that for me. Th e town bears the name of Dora Drawdy, a homesteader who befriended federal surveyors in the mid-1800s. In appreciation for her Southern hospitality, they named the area’s lake after her in 1846, and the nearby town—originally known as Royellou—followed suit in 1883. Mount Dora stands 184 feet above sea level, making it one of Florida’s rare “mountain-top” towns. Mount Dora’s slogan proclaims it’s “Someplace Special,” and everyone we met just loved living and working there. Tape a long section of damask-print wallpaper to the wall with painter’s tape, then draw the animal’s outline on the paper either freehand or using a tracer that enlarges the image. ARTFUL GIVING: The Alabama Guild of Decorative Artists The Alabama Guild of Decorative Artists in Birmingham continues to be one of the larger and more active chapters of the national Society of Decorative Painters. Formed more than ?? years ago, the organization’s ??? members explore their craft through meetings and workshops but also place great importance on using their talents to support and uplift others. Several years ago, the guild treated one of the Birmingham Air Reserve Units to a Christmas tree fully decorated with hand-painted ornaments. More recent projects include painting tote bags and filling them with toys for area homeless shelters, donating memory boxes to hospitals for families who have lost their babies, and decorating cheerful red wagons for Children’s Hospital of Alabama.
