Dear Friends, The sweet summer breeze comes blowing in, lifting the flag that hangs near the patio at our ranch and reminding me that this time of year represents freedom in all its meanings. As my husband, Neal, and I sip our coffee in the morning, the flapping of that flag makes me think of all the sacrifices, great and small, embodied in the stars and stripes that soar above us. When Alan Henderson became an intern for graphic artist Jennifer Tatham at an elite advertising agency in Birmingham, she knew he was no ordinary apprentice. Ruffles are truly all the rage these days, and with good reason—they add frills of femininity to everything from blouses and skirts to pillows and bedding. Our editor loved these girlie gathers, and she wondered if the style would work for living room curtains. Our dear and clever friends at Pate-Meadows Designs took her idea and turned it into a very stylish reality. Beginning with a bolt of beautiful linen fabric, they created curtain panels, then added deep flounces at the top and four rows of ruffles along the bottom. For extra interest, each lovely ruffle is delicately trimmed with coordinating ribbon. Clipon curtain rings attach easily to the top. Rather than pack away an alfresco studio when you’re expecting guests, re-envision the inspired space as a casual dinner setting. Imagine a white wooden table as your canvas, and set it with brightly brushed china and hand-blown stemware that are themselves works of art. There is something magical—and refreshing—about plants that grow in water. Even if you don’t have a pond, you can enjoy many of these plants with a container water garden. Depending on the size of the container, your water garden can feature a collection of plants or one striking specimen. For a dramatic statement, you can group pots, and when entertaining, you can move this instant garden project as needed to provide a focal point or accent. It’s easy to grow shallow water plants in a large decorative pot filled with water. A glazed weatherproof or terra-cotta pot works well, but plastic or wooden tubs are also an option. The Nathaniel Russell House Symbol of Prosperity Twenty-seven-year-old Rhode Islander Nathaniel Russell arrived in Charleston in 1738 with a pocketful of dreams and the determination to carve out a place for himself in the mercantile industry. He did just that, rising to a position of prominence while enjoying the accompanying wealth and influence. In 1803, he began building a grand Federal townhouse on Meeting Street just a few blocks from High Battery; the mansion that was completed in 1808 proved to be one of the city’s finest residences. The imposing three-story brick house occupies the site with great presence. There is an unusual octagon-shaped projection off one side, with lush gardens all around. When flowers are involved, whether they be rare or commonplace, dramatic or dainty, they tend to steal the show—and for good reason. It’s why we love them so much. But that doesn’t mean they should be the only concern when designing a floral display. Just as linens and accessories finish a table set with fine china, the auxiliary elements of an arrangement are important in attaining expert polish. In the featured display, for example, I chose the container and foliage with care and purpose in order to present these tropical blooms with the greatest impact. The Joseph Manigault House Charleston’s Huguenot House When French Huguenots fled their motherland to escape religious persecution, they found a friendly welcome awaiting them on the sunny South Carolina shores. One of these newcomers, Joseph Manigault, soon established himself as a successful landowner with rice plantations outside of Charleston. With many business details to attend to in the city, he needed a townhouse, so he turned to his brother, Gabriel, a success in his own right, to design it. The result was the impressive three-story Adam-style home, one of the city’s most distinguished dwellings. In addition to being a wealthy planter, Joseph Manigault was a state legislator and a trustee of the College of Charleston.
