Before the days of radio and phonograph records, sheets of music often fanned out above the piano, beckoning the family to gather around the instrument for evening entertainment. Scores of these easy-to-follow songs swept the country through the mid- 20th century as music publishers clamored to outdo one another’s catchy tunes and appealing cover art. By the time demand waned, composers like Irving Berlin and Stephen Foster had left their momentous marks, and even Norman Rockwell had contributed his artistic talents to covers. With such an endless array of musical selections available, sometimes the greatest challenge is deciding which ones to collect. Some collectors simply look for favorite songs or composers, while others search out selections from a particular time period, such as “Over There” and “Where Do We Go…

MISS MUFFET’S CUPCAKES Makes 2 dozen 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 11/2 cups sugar, divided 1 tablespoon orange zest 4 large eggs, separated 21/2 cups cake fl our 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon orange extract Orange Frosting (recipe follows) Garnish: cake sparkles 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line 2 (12-cup) muffi n pans with paper liners. 2. In a large bowl, combine butter, 11/4 cups sugar, and orange zest. Beat at high speed with an electric mixer until fl uffy. Treasured Traditions I am writing this letter to let you know what an inspiration Southern Lady has been for me! My fi rst treasured (and now tattered) issue was Holiday 2002, which included a piece called “Let’s Do Lunch” about women who exchange beautifully arranged lunches at the holidays. Carole Harrell is not the fi rst to take a bow when a production of The Morningstar Theater Foundation comes to a close. Instead, the celebrated playwright will tell you that her satisfaction comes from seeing the fruits of her gift: the laughter of the audience and the impact on the community. CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DOUGH S’MORES Makes 11/2 dozen Chocolate Chip Cookies (recipe follows) Homemade Marshmallows (recipe on page 86) 1. Preheat oven to 450°. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Place 18 cookies, rounded-side down, on prepared pan. Place 1 tablespoon reserved chocolate chip cookie dough on middle of cookie. Oftentimes, fresh ideas come to me in unexpected places. Lamp Shade Step by Step For this project, you’ll need a ribbed lamp shade, a glue gun, large pinecones, and lots of miniature pinecones. Step 1: Remove petals from bottom to top of large pinecone by using fi ngers or a pair of pliers. Step 2: Using a glue gun, adhere a row of overlapping petals down each rib of the lamp shade. Adhere a row of petals, side by side but not overlapping, around the base of the lamp shade. Repeat process to form a second row.
