In the early 1800s, Dr. Nathaniel Ward, a British physician, discovered terrariums quite by accident. Ward attempted to grow ferns in his backyard, but because of London’s polluted air, the plants could not survive. At this same time, Ward was studying caterpillars and their stages of development through covered glass jars. It was in one of these jars that Ward observed several plants growing in a bit of soil.
