Curiously enough, despite being repeatedly ahead of the Premier League and Serie A in the UEFA coefficient rankings, and despite, until recently, boasting the two greatest players in the world in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, La Liga has not generally been a popular destination for North American investment.
Indeed, foreign investment of any origin has largely avoided Spanish football. The system of governance almost precludes it. Barcelona, Real Madrid and many others are membership organisations, and presidential elections determine who runs the club and for how long. That is changing–Israeli tycoon Idan Ofer has increased his shares in Atletico Madrid and Qatar’s Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani has owned Malaga, with varying levels of investment, success and popularity, since 2010.
