“Silicon Valley is very much a boys’ club, but Asia is totally different” MANY ASIAN CITIES want to become the next Silicon Valley, and these aspiring regional tech hubs have an interesting competitive advantage—there’s a much stronger female leadership presence in Asia’s start-ups, says veteran digital entrepreneur and investor Frank Meehan. Frank first started working in Asia in 1998, and co-founded venture capital firm SparkLabs Global Ventures. Its offshoot, SparkLabs Korea, invests in early-stage Asian start-ups with global potential. High-energy playtime defined Sienna Jueptner’s candy-themed sixth birthday party in January that was hosted by mum Rasina Rubin and godmother Nana Au-Chua. Camouflage—seen just as often on boot camp fitness instructors and overzealous corporate types enjoying paintballing awaydays as in actual mortal combat—was firmly revisited and re-envisioned for SS17. Vetements, Public School, Opening Ceremony and Off-White have all been long-standing streetwear pioneers of the print on caps, tees and tracksuits. However, this season, camo has been camped up rather wonderfully and served in a delightful array of colours and luxe fabrics. Bottega Veneta rendered the print in geometric, blocky prints, while Cerruti adapted it with painterly splashes and Dries Van Noten collaged camouflage with patchwork. At Valentino, camo print was reduced from its usual five layers of colour to three. This month, WOAM’s founding partners Christine Amour-Levar and Valerie Boffy will lead a team of 11 women on an expedition to Bhutan that includes a three-day stand-up paddleboarding journey to raise awareness and $25,000 in funds to build shelters for Renew (Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women).
