THIS MONTH, WE CELEBRATE the 33rd anniversary of Singapore Tatler’s founding. In the changing media landscape, it’s ever more important for our survival that we forge ahead with diversity, ideas and relevant content, with the latter being of particular significance. In the last decade, rather than charging forward blindly, we have been steadily charting our path and strategically laying down the foundations for our future growth. As many business entrepreneurs will attest to, it is so tempting and easy to be chasing the next rainbow and going down the general direction that everyone else seems to be heading towards, without studied thought to what we really stand for and what we want to achieve. It’s much harder to stay true to your personality than it is to follow trends—yet find…
“IT’S BEEN YEARS SINCE WE’VE DONE a Tatler shoot together as a family,” exclaims Stephanie Lee as she steps into our location for the day, a villa at Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa. She and her sister Cheryl were invited to join their parents, Billy and Jessie, to celebrate being named Society Couple of the Year at the Singapore Tatler Ball this month. As the day wears on, Billy becomes concerned about Cheryl, as she is expecting her second child. But like a bunch of troopers, the family carries on until the sun goes down, their energy never dropping (of course, plenty of coffee and Coca-Cola helps). As they graciously work through the day, it’s easy to understand why Billy and Jessie are the recipients of the Society Couple of the…

YES HARPREET BEDI With the sheer number of charity galas conducted in Singapore, it’s possible that causes and messages become diluted. Although galas can be a valuable way for a charity organisation to raise funds, the reality is that these events tend to only be accessible or attended by a certain—often more wealthy—segment of society. In Singapore, this segment of the society appears to be experiencing “gala fatigue” of sorts, resulting in a greater general apathy towards a deeper understanding of the causes underlying these grander fundraising events. But charity galas are here to stay. Nonetheless, the cause is increasingly used as an excuse to host a party, hence other avenues should be considered to achieve the necessary awareness and funds for a cause. A trunk show, for example, like…
SINGAPORE HAS WELL advanced into an era where women in power are increasingly becoming a norm. In other parts of the world, women are still subject to abuse and oppression. Since 1999, the Singapore Committee for UN Women has been tirelessly working towards ending this global problem by supporting local and international causes that empower women. For a decade now, its annual gala, Snow: Say No to the Oppression of Women has also been celebrating women in a bigger way. On October 9, the 10th edition of the gala unfolds at Capella Singapore with a garden party theme. It will pay tribute to female entrepreneurs and leaders, such as guest-of-honour Grace Fu, who is minister in the Prime Minister’s Office. Another inspiring female figure attending is Iranian-American astronaut Anousheh Ansari,…
