The Select Centre, a not-for-profit organisation aimed at bridging cultures through translation, was launched in April 2015. With the help of a National Arts Council Seed Grant, it was able to kickstart a series of programmes including the Literary Gateway initiative in Myanmar, where stories by Singaporean writer Alfian Sa’at were translated from English to Burmese during workshops. “An unexpected result of this was that a Burmese publisher decided to publish the translation of Alfian’s book,” shares co-founder William Phuan. KIICHIRO MASUMURA BACKGROUND Award-winning urushi (Japanese lacquer) artist Kiichiro Masumura was born in Tokyo in 1941.
