Haussmannian architecture shapes much of Paris’ built environment, with around 60 per cent of its buildings reflecting this style. Developed during Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann’s urban renewal project, which took place between 1853 and 1870, its uniform facades, wrought-iron balconies and wide boulevards remain integral to the city’s identity. Over 150 years later, these buildings are still highly sought after for their solid construction, high ceilings, and elegant proportion. Looking at this house and ambling through it, one forgets that it is near the centre of town, surrounded by other homes, with a shopping mall and hospital buildings a short distance away. The reason for this is the trees towering over the neighbouring park—so old their trunks are bearded with moss and ferns. The house looks to this small green patch, its own trees merging with those across the fence. This abode was designed for Han Keen Juan and his wife, Ng Choi Hong. But this 20,979 sq ft Good Class Bungalow in the Upper Thomson district—dubbed the House on the Hill—was designed to live; to host, to evolve, and to grow alongside the multigenerational family that it houses. The 3,477 sq ft, four-bedroom apartment is located in an upscale condominium, Nassim Park Residence. It was rented out when the family lived abroad but now that they are based in Singapore, they wanted to tailor it to their needs. A thermo-sensor in the light generates a heat map on the floor, which serves to detect body temperature and monitor the activity level in a space.
