The owner has been working with Foley & Cox for 19 years on abodes in New York and Florida; his daughter also enjoyed a memorable internship with the firm nearly a decade ago. For one recent project, Snow Globe founder Juliana Boh and her team had the wonderful opportunity to furnish such a prized abode. The client provided the following brief: to create a home that combines “modern contemporary elements with a touch of luxury”, with the local furniture retailer tasked to furnish the abode with various bespoke pieces. It started as a couple’s passion project—Karen Chiam and Kiat Ng wanted a challenge outside of their full-time jobs, so they founded their product design firm Dazingfeelsgood in 2015 to make time for such creative pursuits. The studio’s whimsical moniker came about from this desire to daydream. “It was a fun name that came to our minds, as we like dazing at the beach, and feeling good about spacing out. The name embodies our playful spirit,” quips Chiam. Chiam specialises in retail design, while Ng teaches 3D design at Nafa; together, their interdisciplinary expertise feeds off each other. Even the most well-travelled of us know that there’s no place like home. This holds true for a long-term client of designer Ina Rinderknecht, who took years to find an ideal property in his hometown of Teufen in Appenzell, the smallest canton in Switzerland. When he found the right one, a plan was set in motion to create the villa of his dreams. “Our client had been uneasy about the original architect’s plans. Because of our close working relationship, we were able to guide him in a new conceptual direction,” shares Rinderknecht, whose eponymous firm works on luxury hospitality projects and private residences that evoke a worldly appeal. WASTE NOT With 85 recycled textile products in its portfolio, Danish brand Kvadrat has long been an advocate for sustainable design. Years before terms like “carbon neutrality” and “circularity” became buzzwords, Swiss luxury appliances brand V-Zug was already making sustainability a key part of its brand philosophy. Since 2020, the company has been manufacturing its products carbon-neutrally in Zug and Sulgen in Switzerland, is participating in carbon offsetting programmes, and continues to invest in improvements that make its production processes more energy efficient. Although still not a zero-emissions company, the firm aims to slash its carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2030, and is in the midst of switching to using almost completely renewable energy sources in the future. In his work designing luxury homes, Guz Wilkinson sometimes sees an appetite for excess that he finds completely unsustainable. “A recent trend is clients who have approached us requesting very large basements,” says the British founder of Guz Architects. One prospective client wanted a multi-level, climate-controlled bunker for his 40 cars. Wilkinson politely declines any such requests. “Our first premise when taking on a job—and we tend to work with people who love nature more than GFA (gross floor area)—is to try and persuade our clients to only build for what they need,” he says.
