Most of us may think of design in relation to physical objects, such as the chairs in our homes or the clothes we wear. But the tenets of good design can go beyond that—it should also consider the importance of the user’s sensory experiences as well as other considerations unique to the local context. This holistic approach to design is part of what the DesignSingapore Council (DSG) advocates. “At DSG, we drive the adoption of design and the value of design in transforming the economy in terms of what it means for innovation and also the loveability and identity of Singapore,” says Mark Wee, executive director of DSG. “We’re trying to define what good design means. A ward-winning Australian designer Greg Natale is no stranger to sumptuous luxury, having earned plenty of accolades for his extravagant yet soothing interiors. This project, a home accommodating a family of five in Sydney, saw him working with clients with equally in-depth knowledge of opulence—Vince and Melissa Ciolino, the proprietors of Ciolino Constructions, a boutique firm that has built homes for some of Sydney’s best designers, including Natale himself. “These clients are old friends of mine,” says Natale. “As well as being friends, they have a great understanding of design and construction. We have collaborated on bringing homes to life for many of my other clients. With iconic public buildings such as Marina Bay Sands and Jewel Changi Airport, celebrated Israeli architect Moshe Safdie has clearly made his mark on Singapore’s skyline. He has also lent his creative touch to housing projects, one of them being The Edge—a 20-storey luxury condominium on Cairnhill Road. His humanistic views on spatial design and contextual relevance are well-known. Now, a large cultural complex located by the Meixi Lake continues the contemporary trajectory of the city, with the sinuous shape of its buildings setting them apart from the modern city skyline in the neighbourhood. ENTICE AND DELIGHT Homegrown fashion label Ong Shunmugam charts a new milestone with the launch of its homeware line Suvarnabumi. Before it became a multinational firm, AvroKO started as a creative collaboration between friends. Co-founders Greg Bradshaw, Adam Farmerie, William Harris and Kristina O’Neal met during their undergraduate years at Carnegie Mellon University. “We would pop into each other’s studios and critique our self-propelled projects; this was the beginning of realising that we love to work together,” recalls Harris. After branching out to pursue their individual careers, the group reunited in New York for an interdisciplinary project; its success propelled the inception of AvroKO in 2001. Amid the melange of modern houses in central Singapore stands a home that is elegantly simple. The original property was built 80 years ago and has since been lovingly restored with art deco proportions and features by Archetype Studio.
